PEARLAND — As families head into the holiday season, University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) is stepping in to help relieve a common financial strain for local households. UFCU has donated $10,000 each to Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD, a combined $20,000 contribution aimed at clearing outstanding student lunch balances across both districts. The donation comes as UFCU continues expanding its presence in the Greater Houston area, including the recent opening of its Pearland branch. By covering unpaid meal balances, the credit union hopes to remove a burden that can affect students’ daily school experience while allowing campuses and administrators to stay focused on academics and family support rather than financial shortfalls. “Helping students and families in practical ways is an investment in the community as a whole,” said UFCU President and CEO Michael Crowl. “We’re proud to support Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD and look forward to building strong, long-term relationships in the area.” Research consistently links access to regular, nutritious meals with improved attendance, classroom behavior, and academic performance. The two school districts served by this donation educate more than 50,000 students, meaning the impact will reach a large number of families throughout Brazoria County and the surrounding region. Alvin ISD Superintendent Carol Nelson said the contribution provides meaningful relief for families and helps the district keep its focus on student learning. Pearland ISD Superintendent Dr. Larry Berger echoed that sentiment, noting that partnerships like this strengthen the overall learning environment by addressing students’ basic needs. UFCU opened its Pearland branch in November and offers services such as financial counseling, mortgage and auto loans, and access to a nationwide network of fee-free ATMs. The credit union says it plans to continue working with local organizations to support education and financial well-being as it becomes more established in the community.
